What we got here is a failure to communicate.
And a man wandered up to the counter. He set a DVD case down, one marked for sale only.
So I call it up on the computer, quote him the price, as I key it in.
He hands me his card and bit of cash since he didn't want it all on his card. Can do, just need to see ID for the card.
ID matches, I run the card. Present him with the slip to sign.
He suddenly inquires about how much a rental account would cost. He isn't signing. I cautiously give him the cost. He tells me he no longer wants to buy the DVD, he'd like to rent a movie instead.
You slack-jawed felch-monkey! You are not going to pull that shit. Unfortunately sir, the store has an all sales are final policy and I've already rung up the sale.
"But I have not signed. You can just void the card."
I have already rung up the sale. At this point, I really can't do that.
"I have not signed. I don't want it. It wouldn't take you that much effort to fix it."
Knowing at this point the moron was going to dig in his heels and was going to cause a huge pain in the ass for the store if I held my ground I relented. Alright, here's your cash back and I'm reversing the card charge.
Not understanding my tone, he wanders off in his misapprehension to find a rental.
He comes back. Would you please sign the sales void slip for me? I take the slip back and the DVD box he places at the counter. Thank you. Unfortunately, I will not be able to offer you a rental membership at this time.
"Why?"
Because you are a total fucktard! I informed you that all sales are final. You persisted in denying that a sale had happened. So you got your wish.
"Right. I want to rent this now."
Bummer. I made a call. You lost your chance to change your mind. Deal with the consequences. Unfortunately, I cannot set you up with a membership at this time.
"You're not going to let me rent?"
We do reserve the right to refuse service to anyone.
"Where? Show me where in your bylaws it says that."
What the hell are you smoking?! I don't know a store in the nation that doesn't reserve that right. It's posted in front of you right now, sir.
"You're not going to let me rent?"
Correct. You are unwilling to abide by store policies, therefore I cannot in good conscience allow you to rent at this time.
"Who's your manager?"
I am the Assistant Manager, sir.
"Fine. Who's your Manager?"
We don't actually have one at this time. (No particular need for that job title at this time.) My superior would be the owner and he does not keep regular hours.
"I'll be back when he does have hours."
He does not keep store hours.
"I'll catch him soon and we'll see what he has to say."
Have a good night sir.
What? Does he really think that my boss is going to fail to support my judgment call? That he's going to hang me out to dry? Does he think his complaint will result in my termination? All he's done is demonstrate how unsuitable he is to maintain as a customer.

I sympathize. My family business back in Thailand is a convenience store, and I had to help my parents for years and years as I went to school. Some people are in-your-face obnoxious, while others take a bit of time to show how much of an asshole they can be.
We had this woman come in who just kept haggling with the prices and making a mess of the displays. My father finally had enough and told her that she can go buy her stuff elsewhere, that we weren't going to sell to her.
"Why?" she asked. "Is it because I'm a foreigner?"
"No. It's because you're rude and extremely tiresome to deal with," my father said.
"I have money," she said.
"That's nice. However, I'd like to ask you to leave."
"You're just racist!" she yelled as she left.
Yes, woman, just keep telling yourself that. I guess it's easier to look out a window than look in a mirror.
