Barring bartering.

I have to wonder about things every now and again. For example, I am curious why it is that people will wander into the store, select an item, and then proceed to dicker over the price. This country and culture is not one that barters. You cannot walk into a market in this city and attempt to negotiate a better price. The system is not in place for that.

If I name a price for a toy or movie, that is the price of that item. It is not an arbitrary amount. It is not an opening gambit. Selecting something and telling me you will only pay some sum will not cause me to try and up-bid you. The cost listed is the cost it will go at, unless it is on sale and the percentage off is already set.

The store does sell smoking supplies however and with the number of people who make them in the area, there is an established current of bartering. Some stores in the area depend on it, pricing things high expressly for the purpose of "making someone a deal". It's not a route we wanted to go.

Other than that, it's not usual. So where in the name of Odin's furry cod-piece do they suddenly think the rules are different here than every other store in the area?

Therefore, knock it the hell off!

Do not stand there in front of me and loudly proclaim how much cheaper you could get whatever it is you have in hand at some other place. We have a good idea what the average price is around town. It's also bloody rude. You are not liable to provoke a reaction to your liking. Chances are you are lying through your teeth. And if you aren't, why the hell are you in my store instead of there? No one is forcing you to patronize this store.

Do not spend fifteen minutes trying to talk me into making you a deal. You come off as pushy and cheap which does NOT make me want to do you any favors. I'm much more likely to offer a deal to those that aren't expecting them.
